This workshop (developed by Dr. Susan Goold of CBSSM) has been specially designed for all research personnel who obtain consent from human volunteers including:

  • Faculty and Staff
  • Students
  • Research Assistants
  • Study Coordinators
  • Principal Investigators

By the end of this workshop, attendees will:

  • Understand why obtaining valid consent from potential participants is important
  • Know the components of valid consent
  • Know the specific elements that comprise valid consent
  • Know the meaning of (in the context of informed consent:
    • High-risk research
    • Vulnerable patients
    • Emergency research
  • Have been introduced to techniques that are useful to assure that consent obtained is valid
  • Know how to obtain valid informed consent from a potential participant

Course Curriculum:
The curriculum for this workshop is presented through multiple methods to cover as many learning styles as possible. The material will be presented through:

  • Lecture that explains:
    • Rationale behind obtaining valid consent
    • Components of consent
  • Small group exercise that shows how to:
    • Obtain consent
    • Evaluate competence
    • Reveal conflicts
  • Simulated Patient Instructors (SPIs) who will:
    • Assess attendee's ability
    • Provide feedback to attendee
  • Assessment/Evaluation that will help attendees:
    • Compare knowledge gains
    • Measure satisfaction and usefulness of course
