2022 ASBH Cornerstone Award

The University of Michigan Medical School's Center for Bioethics and Social Sciences in Medicine (CBSSM) has won the American Society for Bioethics & Humanities 2022 Cornerstone Award. The ASBH Cornerstone Award is the Society's highest honor given to an institution. The Cornerstone Award recognizes outstanding, enduring contributions by an institution that has deeply enriched and helped shape the direction of the fields of bioethics or the health humanities. By winning this award, CBSSM joins other pillars of the bioethics and humanities community including The Hastings Center, the Kennedy Institute of Ethics, The MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics, and the American Journal of Bioethics.

This award recognizes CBSSM’s applied and normative ethics work setting the agenda for scholarship, practice, and policy at the local, regional, and national level. CBSSM has created a unique, multidisciplinary community unifying individuals who had previously functioned in separate silos (clinical ethics, ethics scholarship, and decision sciences), creating something truly more than the sum of our parts. CBSSM faculty have – time and again – identified critical and complex bioethical issues, empirically researched the impact of different solutions, disseminated results, and written policies that have been adopted at the institutional, state, and federal level. It is such an honor to be recognized in this way. Congratulations to the entire CBSSM community!
