Title: Phenomenology as blind spot: reaching outside of Western bioethics to fix the U.S. pain-opiate conundrum
Short Abstract: The doctor-patient relationship has become increasingly fraught in the U.S. around issues of pain management due to the contemporary epidemic of opiate overdose and subsequent "pharmacovigilance" on the part of clinicians. In this talk, I explore how this fraught relationship may be due in part to blind spots coming from the philosophical origins of Western bioethics, and use cases both from the U.S. and Thailand to suggest an alternative for individual practice and for national policy.
