Stephanie Kukora, MD, Clinical Lecturer in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, Pediatrics. “Neonatal Ethics Global Health Research: Experiences in Ethiopia and Ghana"

Over the past three decades a significant reduction in under-five mortality has occurred globally, though the proportion of these deaths occurring during the neonatal period has steadily risen. 2.5 million infants die in the first month of life world-wide, with the vast majority of these deaths occurring in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs).In this talk, ethical issues surrounding disparities in newborn care between high and low resource settings, as well as challenges arising from implementation of new technologies and development of global partnerships will be discussed.  I will draw on research conducted with our neonatology partners in Ethiopia and Ghana exploring attitudes on extreme prematurity and the impact of culture on neonatal intensive care provision.
