Brian J. Zikmund-Fisher, PhD

Associate Director

Brian J. Zikmund-Fisher is an Associate Professor in the Department of Health Behavior and Health Education, University of Michigan School of Public Health, as well as a Research Associate Professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine, University of Michigan Medical School. He has been part of CBSSM and its precursors at U-M since 2002 and acts as CBSSM Associate Director.

J. Scott Roberts, PhD

Faculty

Scott Roberts, PhD, is Professor of Health Behavior & Health Education at the University of Michigan’s School of Public Health (U-M SPH), where he directs the School’s Public Health Genetics program and teaches a course on public health ethics. A clinical psychologist by training, Dr. Roberts conducts research on the psychosocial implications of genetic testing for adult-onset diseases.

Geoffrey Barnes was featured in a recent MHealth Lab article, "Medication Adherence a Problem in Atrial Fibrillation Patients." Dr. Barnes is the lead author of JAMA Cardiology article, which reports that while anticoagulant therapy is important for stroke prevention in people with atrial fibrillation, many people don’t stick with it for various reasons (side effects, physician advice, etc.).

Elias Baumgarten, PhD

Elias Baumgarten served on the philosophy faculty of the University of Michigan-Dearborn from 1972 to 2018. In addition to teaching Medical Ethics regularly, he taught a wide range of other courses including "Darwinism and Philosophy," "The Problem of Human Freedom," and "Ethics of War and Peace." He has served on the UMHS Pediatric Ethics Committee since 1986 and the Adult Ethics Committee since 1985. He was a member of the Executive Committee of the Medical Ethics Resource Network of Michigan from 2007 to 2012.

Reshma Jagsi, MD, DPhil

Director

Reshma Jagsi, MD, DPhil, is Professor, Deputy Chair, and Residency Program Director in the Department of Radiation Oncology and Director of the Center for Bioethics and Social Sciences in Medicine at the University of Michigan.

She graduated first in her class from Harvard College and then pursued her medical training at Harvard Medical School. She also served as a fellow in the Center for Ethics at Harvard University and completed her doctorate in Social Policy at Oxford University as a Marshall Scholar.

Michele Gornick, PhD, MA

Faculty

Dr. Michele Gornick is a Research Investigator in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School. Her background training is in cancer genetics, with a focus on using quantitative methods to better understand the genome. Dr. Gornick joined CBSSM to pursue her interest in translational medicine, specifically dealing with issues surrounding communicating genomic information to patients, physicians and other health care providers. She was a VA and CBSSM Postdoctoral Fellow, 2012-2015.

Janice Firn, PhD, MSW

Faculty

Dr. Firn has a BS from Michigan State University, MSW from the University of Michigan, and PhD from Lancaster University (UK). Before CBSSM, Janice worked in oncology and palliative care at Michigan Medicine. In her role as Clinical Ethicist for the Clinical Ethics Service, Janice responds to ethics consultation requests, and participates in preventative ethics rounds and education and research initiatives.  Her academic interests include bioethics; self-care, burnout, and resilience; palliative and end of life care; and interprofessional education and collaboration.

Lauren Smith, MD

Faculty

Dr. Lauren Smith is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Pathology at the University of Michigan specializing in hematopathology. She is Director of the Ethics Path of Excellence at the Medical School. She has been a member of the University of Michigan Adult Ethics Committee since 2005 and also serves as a Faculty Ethicist in CBSSM's Clinical Ethics Service. She is Chair of the Michigan State Medical Society Ethics Committee. Her research interests include ethical issues in clinical medicine and pathology.

Julie Wright Nunes, MD, MPH

Julie Wright Nunes is an Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan Department of Internal Medicine. Her research interests include Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and its prevention and also the development of methods and tools to help facilitate and optimize provider-directed CKD patient education.
