Darin Zahuranec, MD

Faculty

Darin B. Zahuranec, M.D, M.S., (Residency 2005, School of Public Health 2009), is an associate professor of neurology in the University of Michigan Medical School. Dr. Zahuranec received his bachelor's degree, summa cum laude, from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1997, and earned his medical degree from Case Western Reserve in 2001. He completed an internship at University Hospitals of Cleveland; residency in the Department of Neurology at the U-M, where he served as chief resident in 2004-05; and a fellowship in vascular neurology here.

Dr  Sarah Hawley, PhD, MPH, has received considerable press coverage on her presentation, "Is Contralateral Prophylactic Mastectomy Overused?" Her study found that many women who get a double mastectomy don't need it. The findings from her presentation were featured on the Today ShowNCI Cancer BulletinMSN & HealthDay and U of M Health. Dr. Reshma Jagsi, MD, PhD, co-authored this study.

Reshma Jagsi, MD, DPhil, recently had an article published in JAMA entitled “Gender Differences in the Salaries of Physician Researchers.” The results of the RWJ-funded study showed that male physician researchers earned $12,001 more than their female colleagues, after adjusting for a variety of factors that might impact salary. This disparity can add up to $350,000 over the course of a medical career.
Dr. Jagsi was interviewed by the Associated Press, and the article received considerable press coverage in multiple sources including the New York TimesForbes, MSNBC, and the Wall Street Journal. Click here for more information.

Lisa Szymecko recently presented at the Western Michigan University’s Medical Humanities Workgroup Conference. Dr. Szymecko presentation was entitled, “Social Farming across the Spectrum.” In this presentation, Szymecko discussed the development of farms that focus specifically on engaging individuals with autism spectrum disorder.
