Alumni

Dr. Matula was a CBSSM postdoctoral research fellow, 2019-2021.

She is currently a research fellow at Cincinnati Children's Hospital, doing research on decision making for children with chronic health conditions. Kelly completed a PhD in Behavioral Decision Research from Carnegie Mellon University in 2018, with a research focus on medical decision making. Broadly, her research interests involve patient and surrogate medical literacy and its impact on decision making and treatment compliance, especially for children, young adults, and their families or caregivers. She is particularly interested in how various aspects of clinician-patient communication affect these issues. Her previous research focused on evaluating patient and surrogate understanding of informed consent documents for clinical research and finding ways to maximize understanding consistent with ethical and legal requirements. She has additional training in how to effectively communicate with the general public about complex scientific topics, including medicine.
