F. Jacob Seagull, PhD joined CBSSM as a Research Specialist Lead in September 2021. Jake is a human factors consultant for healthcare quality improvement and patient safety, as well medical product design. He has spent the last 20 years in academic and applied healthcare human factors. His work at the University of Michigan has previously included Continuous Improvement Specialist for the Cardiovascular and Neurosciences Programs, and as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Learning Health Sciences at the University of Michigan Medical School. He was formerly Director of Education Research at the University of Maryland Department of Surgery, and a researcher in the Human Factors Research Program at in University of Maryland’s Department of Anesthesiology.

Dr. Seagull has a background in human-computer interaction, aviation psychology, and medical human factors. His work includes development and testing of online training to improve compliance to sterile practices, and development of a computerized checklist for just-in-time training for medical emergencies. He has carried out research regarding the effects of various technologies on human performance within the domain of medical care provision. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign in Engineering Psychology. He received his M.S. in Engineering Psychology and Behavioral Sciences from the Technion—The Israel Institute of Technology. He received his A.B. with high honors in Psychology from the University of Michigan.

When not working to improve healthcare, Jake enjoys improving things around the house, or striving to improve his fly casting.
