Quantifying Character?: The Uptake of Situational Judgement Tests in Medical School Admissions

Situational judgement tests present medical school applicants with challenging everyday situations to see how they would respond. In so doing, they aim to measure the personal characteristics of applicants, including their empathy, ethics, equity, communication skills, resilience, and professionalism. How do these tests accomplish their aims? Why have they been so rapidly taken up in medical school admissions processes? Drawing on mixed qualitative methods data, this presentation will include background information on situational judgement tests, warrants for studying them, and a consideration of the ethics of using them.
